Abstract
It is observed how to measure the progress of sustainability and how to define indicators that provide this information. A river basin in Costa Rica has been taken as an example and a methodological approach is proposed for the design of indicators, taking into account the various levels of aggregation. These criteria are integrated into a matrix, with indicators selected accordingly. This framework has been applied in the case study of the Reventado river basin in Costa Rica, for which indicators have been defined at the farm and river basin level. Several field surveys were carried out in order to obtain the information required by the indicators. The corresponding indicators are defined according to a logical and reproducible process, in which the criteria used for the selection of indicators are explained and justified. The three dimensions of sustainability are confronted.
