Abstract
En la costa sur de Guatemala, muchos no siembran frijoles como solían hacerlo sus abuelos. Sin embargo, es posible obtener buenos rendimientos si se elige una variedad resistente al calor, como el Icta ligero. Es importante sembrar en época fría y cuidar de no regar por aspersión. Comunidades como la Florida de Taxisco han tenido éxito con el riego por aspersión, logrando rendimientos de hasta 48 quintales por manzana.
El riego por goteo es una ventaja al transportar agua a través de tuberías de PVC con mini válvulas que facilitan el riego por secciones. Es importante regar entre tramos para asegurar que todas las plantas reciban la misma cantidad de agua, especialmente en tierras secas. No es necesario quemar los rastrojos, ya que proporcionan nutrientes y retienen la humedad del suelo. Los abuelos sembraban el frijol en cuadros, pero sembrar en filas permite trabajar en los espacios libres.
