Abstract
Presenta los principales aspectos relacionados con el mejoramiento de maíz en Paraguay en el marco del Programa de Investigación de Maíz, Quinquenio 1982-1987 ejecutado por varios entes estatales. Destaca información específica sobre la variedad Venezuela-1; material genético base del mejoramiento para el maíz en dicho país, así como de variedades introducidas del CIMMYT y los resultados obtenidos en ensayos experimentales con este material genético. Señala además que Paraguay no está ejecutando ningún proyecto específico para seleccionar variedades resistentes a algún patógeno en particular, pero en casi todas las selecciones que se realizan, se ha puesto énfasis en el aspecto sanitario. Presenta un cuadro sobre poblaciones en proceso de selección para resistencia a plagas en el marco del Programa de Investigación en Maíz. Las poblaciones incluidas son: Venezuela-1; Centralmex; Avati Moroti x Centralmex x Compuesto Opaco; Compuesto Flint Blanco; y Avati Moroti.
