The National Federation of Panela Producers (Fedepanela), with the support of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and financing from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland, is promoting a project to improve the thermal efficiency of paneleras stoves in Colombia. This project seeks to reduce the use of additional fuels such as firewood and tires, thereby reducing production costs and environmental impact. Annual savings are estimated at 144,000 million pesos. The new technology includes systems for heat recovery, automatic control of the bagasse draft and pre-drying, optimizing combustion and increasing productivity. The project has already been tested in pilot mills in Cundinamarca, with plans to extend the technology to more than 1,000 producers in various regions. Producers have seen significant improvements in costs and efficiency, and Fedepanela organizes tours to showcase these advances. The adoption of this technology could transform the panel subsector, increasing income and preserving the environment.
