Abstract
En el incremento del PIB per cápita en los países de altos ingresos y América Latina, aunado al incremento en la demanda de productos procesados y de calidad; así como el cambio en la naturaleza de las tecnologías biológicas y el fortalecimiento de la propiedad intelectual es probable que la participación del sector privado en la inversión del IyD agropecuario siga en aumento. Un ejemplo reciente del potencial de estas tecnologías en América Latina es el de Argentina que en 1999 contaba con el 16.8 por ciento del área cultivada en el mundo con cultivos transgénicos, desarrollados por empresas privadas. Por otra parte, no es previsible que la inversión pública en IyD en América Latina y el Caribe aumente en términos reales en el corto plazo, más bien pueden incrementarse emprendimientos conjuntos entre sector privado, público y universidades para satisfacer la demanda de nichos específicos de mercado, con productos diferenciados de calidad.
