Abstract
En este trabajo se pretende un balance de la evolución del sector agropecuario durante la década de los noventa. Corresponde a una etapa en la cual se reformuló completamente la política agropecuaria para responder el entorno de economía abierta en la que se vió inmerso el sector. La apertura comercial es una de las fuerzas, y quizás una de las más importantes, que influyeron en el diseño de políticas públicas en el sector a lo largo de la década. El tema del campo ha sido siempre y seguirá siendo fuente de polémicas inagotables tanto en México como en el exterior. Se puede decir que las sociedades modernas, o bien esperan demasiado del sector agropecuario, o no siempre están dispuestas a pagar por ello. Un análisis breve de la cobertura temática relacionada con el sector que presentan los medios de comunicación en México hace ver que predominan preocupaciones que van desde la balanza comercial, el crecimiento del PIB sectorial, la soberanía o la seguridad alimentaria, los problemas de comercialización y los ingresos de los productores, los jornaleros agrícolas, la pobreza rural, la degradación de los recursos naturales, y la calidad y la carestía de los alimentos, por mencionar únicamente los principales.
