Las zonas rurales de Ecuador han reportado elevados niveles de pobreza por lo que se ha tratado de involucrar a estas comunidades en programas de capacitación agrícolas que permitan mejores condiciones de producción de alimentos. A pesar de esta situación, durante la pandemia, la agricultura familiar ha sido de las áreas del sector más afectadas, ante la dificultar de cubrir los costos de producción, comercializar los productos sin necesidad de intermediarios y contar con medios de transporte para acceder a zonas urbanas donde las oportunidades de comercio son mayores. Se requiere mayor participación del gobierno local para atender las necesidades de los agrocomerciantes, fomentar el comercio regional y el desarrollo sostenible de la agricultura en las zonas rurales, gestionar financiamiento y asistencia técnica a los agricultores
