Abstract

The significant achievements in Belize in 2023 include several projects and initiatives carried out by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA). One of these projects is the "Building Community Resilience via Transformative Adaptation" project, which aims to create opportunities to support alternative livelihoods. Implementation of this project is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2024. IICA also participated in a consultancy at the request of the World Bank to assess Belize's agro-processing sector and produce a country policy note in line with CARICOM's "25 by 2025" initiative. The report analyzes trends in agricultural production, post-harvest storage, and agro-processing capacity. It also includes proposals for policy options to promote sectoral growth, including schemes for micro, small, medium, and large-scale companies. Under the 11th European Development Fund, the IICA delegation in Barbados implemented the "Support to CARIFORUM States in Furthering the Implementation of their Economic Partnership Agreement Commitments and in Meaningfully Reaping the Benefits of the Agreements - Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures Project" in Belize. This project included workshops to sensitize poultry producers on revised health regulations, training for the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) Central Investigation Laboratory, and technical assistance for Naledo Belize, a turmeric-based products producer. IICA also played a role in supporting the Belize Agricultural Health Authority's application to the Codex Trust Fund to strengthen food control systems in Belize. Additionally, they participated in the judging committee to select and recognize the Female, Male, and Junior Farmer of the Year during the National Agriculture and Trade Show, acknowledging the contributions of small-scale farmers to the economy of Belize.
