La Agenda Regional Andina del Instituto Interamericano de Cooperación para la Agricultura (IICA) describe muy bien el panorama general del sector rural y de la agricultura en Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú y Venezuela. La magnitud de la población, la extensión geográfica, el potencial del sector agrícola y su importancia relativa dentro de la economía regional, y la necesidad de programas integrales de desarrollo agrícola y rural son algunos de los factores que justifican los esfuerzos del Instituto para contribuir al reposicionamiento de la agricultura y la vida rural en esta región.
