Abstract
Se analiza el impacto del uso de la tierra sobre la calidad de los suelos en la cuenca media del río Reventado en Costa Rica. Para tal fin se identificaron indicadores de calidad de suelo, que permitieran medir cambios de las características del suelo en función del uso de la tierra. Dado que no existían áreas sin uso agropecuario en el área de investigación, se compararon dos tipos de uso agropecuario que diferían en términos de la intensidad de la intervención humana: áreas usadas como potreros para una ganadería extensiva y áreas dedicadas a un uso intensivo de producción hortícola. De acuerdo con los resultados del estudio, la producción intensiva de hortalizas, tal como se está practicando en el área de investigación, conduce a una degradación de los suelos que se manifiesta en pérdida de materia orgánica, aumento de la erosión, deterioro de la estructura del suelo y aumento de su acidez. La degradación del suelo, a su vez, tiene impactos negativos sobre la productividad y la producción de hortalizas, afectando también la dimensión económica de la sostenibilidad.
