dc.description.abstractTopics covered in the symposium: the occurrence of N-fixing symbionts in the root nodules of non-legumes, such as the Frankia-Alnus and Rhizobium-Parasponia symbioses, and the mechanims of infection of higher plants by such organims formed the subject of the first major section. Some comparisons with the mechanism of infection of legumes by rhizobia were made. The N-fixing cyanobacteria were considered from the points of view of isolation, characterization of species and matabolism, and the role of Anabaena spp. in the Azolla-Anabaena symbiosis. The agronomic importance of the Azolla-Anabaena association in wetland rice production was discussed.es
