Este estudio presenta una visión dinámica acerca de las consecuencias de las políticas de ajuste estructural en el sector agropecuario para la organización de los sistemas de producción campesina de granos básicos en Panamá; en términos de modificaciones en materia de las técnicas y tecnologías de producción, el grado de diversificación de la producción y la insercción comercial. A partir de la medición de los términos de intercambio para la producción agropecuaria (modificaciones en los precios relativos, tasas de interés y condiciones de reproducción de la fuerza de trabajo) se han trazado las consecuencias para la rentabilidad de los sistemas de producción campesina y las perspectivas de sosteniblidad a mediano y largo plazo. Se elaboraron algunos escenarios disponibles y factibles para la modificación del sistema de producción que podrían garantizar las condiciones de reproducción para la producción campesina. Los resultados finales de este estudio ofrecen un conjunto de criterios operativos para determinar la orientación de los programas de reforzamiento de la investigación agronómica en función del desarrollo de sistemas de generación y transferencia de tecnología, los cuales son compatibles con las actuales condiciones de producción de granos básicos en Panamá
