Programa hemisférico de biotecnología y bioseguridad

El PHBB resume la importancia y la necesidad de la incorporación de nuevas tecnologías como las agrobiotecnologías dentro de las políticas nacionales, así como la contribución de estas en la competitividad del sector agrícola de los países miembros del IICA. Durante el proceso de formulación, el PHBB también reconoce las iniciativas regionales de cooperación en agrobiotecnología y bioseguridad existentes. Entre estas iniciativas están la Estrategia Regional en Biotecnología y Bioseguridad para América Central y la Iniciativa Regional sobre Biotecnología del Caribe que el IICA ha estado desarrollando. Estas iniciativas han venido desarrollándose en colaboración con otras regiones y organizaciones internacionales tales como CATIE, OIRSA, en el caso de Centro América y CARDI en el caso del Caribe. De igual manera, el programa reconoce la necesidad de consolidar y compartir experiencias entre otros modelos de cooperación técnica regional en biotecnología. El propósito del PHBB es facilitar mecanismos para el desarrollo, la gestión y el uso seguro de las agrobiotecnologías en favor de una agricultura competitiva y sostenible para los países de las Américas. Su misión es identificar y promover oportunidades para la ejecución de actividades entre todas las partes interesadas, utilizando los recursos disponibles y los canales institucionales (nacionales y regionales) existentes.

The PHBB summarizes the importance and need to incorporate new technologies such as agrobiotechnologies into national policies, as well as their contribution to the competitiveness of the agricultural sector of the member countries of the IICA. During the formulation process, the PHBB also recognizes existing regional cooperation initiatives in agrobiotechnology and biosafety. Among these initiatives are the Regional Strategy on Biotechnology and Biosafety for Central America and the Regional Initiative on Biotechnology for the Caribbean that IICA has been developing. These initiatives have been being developed in collaboration with other regions and international organizations such as CATIE, OIRSA, in the case of Central America, and CARDI in the case of the Caribbean. Likewise, the program recognizes the need to consolidate and share experiences among other models of regional technical cooperation in biotechnology. The purpose of the PHBB is to facilitate mechanisms for the development, management, and safe use of agrobiotechnologies in favor of competitive and sustainable agriculture for the countries of the Americas. Its mission is to identify and promote opportunities for the execution of activities among all interested parties, using available resources and existing institutional channels (national and regional).
