Abstract
Este libro trata de la utilización del ensilaje en la alimentación del ganado vacuno en zonas tropicales, como método de conservación de forrajes y como estrategia de ajuste en los períodos de escasez de alimentos para mantener la producción animal durante todo el año. En el primer capítulo se presentan balances hídricos en cuatro regiones del país; en el capítulo 2 junto con la descripción de los diferentes tipos de silos y las características más sobresalientes de las gramíneas, leguminosas y cultivos temporales más utilizados para su elaboración; en el capítulo 3 la microbiología, la química y las diferentes etapas del proceso del ensilaje; en el capítulo 4 presenta una clara comprensión del proceso de fermentación es esencial para entender el porqué de las técnicas, la razón y causa de las pérdidas y el valor de los indicadores que caracterizan el buen manejo del proceso; en el capítulo 5 se describen las variables e indicadores más empleados para la evaluación de los ensilajes; y en el capítulo 6 se trata su potencial productivo y su contribución al crecimiento y producción del ganado vacuno; en el capítulo 7 se analiza la conservación de forrajes y, en particular, el ensilaje en el contexto integral de los sistemas pecuarios de producción. Para tal fin, se discute la oferta tecnológica disponible, el enfoque de sistemas y la caracterización y selección de los sistemas pecuarios de producción. El capítulo se termina con el cálculo de un hato potencial, bajo el supuesto que se eliminarían las restricciones, de alimentación en los períodos críticos.
